The buildings we live and work in will be very different in the future if our climate changes as predicted. Changes in the weather, such as with rainfall, high winds and the frequency of storms will affect the way our homes and offices are designed and constructed. They will need to be better insulated and stronger to deal with these extremes in weather.
We also need to take into consideration our energy consumption and energy supply. It is estimated that in less than ten years time the UK will have to import coal, gas and oil from abroad to fuel our power stations. This will have a severe impact on the availability and price. As you will have seen on television or read in the newspapers many of the fuel rich nations are unstable and are vulnerable to terrorist attack. This has led to UK fuel prices being almost doubled in the last three years and is set to continue. Power interruptions may become frequent with dangerous consequences.
The way in which we build is also having a high environmental impact. 70% of building materials we commonly use - raw stone, gravel, cement or sand; are adding to landscape destruction, toxic run off, deforestation, air and water pollution from processing. (16% of our total water withdrawals are used in the processing of these materials adding to water pollution.)
On site waste generation is adding to landfill problems, such as leaching of heavy metals and water pollution.
Not only do we need to consider the environment and energy but also the way in which we live. Times have changed and we no longer want to live in cold dark uncomfortable houses. Recent trends have moved towards the increased use of glass to allow more natural light into our homes, open plan living in new build is now becoming the norm and the use of the computers and the increasing popularity of working from home has necessitated an additional space or room for use as a home office.
Near Zero CO2 Limited have taken in to account future changes and design buildings that are better insulated against the cold and summer sun, are much stronger to deal with frequent storms and that are acoustically insulated for occupier comfort. We also understand modern living and incorporate light open spaces and areas for work.
Cost is also an issue of concern. Many young people are unable to afford a home of their own or adequate accommodation to start a family. Negative equity is a real possibility for people buying housing at today's prices according to market analysts. By creating a Self Build community and simplifying the process Near Zero CO2 Limited hope to bring new housing within affordable boundaries - at least 30% below market value.
